Winn Feline Foundation Announces the 2020 Cures4Cats Day
WYCKOFF, N.J. October 5, 2020 – Winn Feline Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the health and well-being of cats, announces the Cures4Cats Day on October 17, 2020. The 2020 Cures4Cats theme will emphasize the significance of diabetes mellitus in our feline companions. This annual day of awareness and resulting end of the year campaign are dedicated to highlighting Winn-funded research, the critical need for evidence-based medicine, early-stage biomedical research, and health answers involving cats.
Diabetes is a common and growing malady affecting cats much like their cat-loving humans. Approximately one in every 230 cats will develop diabetes in their lifetime and is expected to increase by 18 percent over the next ten-years. A dynamic disease that changes over time, diabetes in cats can be complex and potentially expensive to treat. Plus, like humans, treatment may not be effective without consistent monitoring and timely application of diet, pharmaceutical and lifestyle solutions.
“Every cat, every day benefits from Winn-funded research,” says Vicki L. Thayer, DVM, DABVP (feline), Winn Executive Director. “We are grateful to our dedicated donors, board members, and researchers who are committed to Winn’s mission and aim to provide all cats with a healthy future. Additional studies focused on solving diabetes mellitus in cats are critical to helping Winn fulfill its mission and to learn more so we save more cat lives.”
As part of the Cures4Cats campaign continuing through the end of 2020, Winn is hosting two webinars related to managing diabetic cats. The first webinar will provide information to veterinary technicians and nurses and is available LIVE on October 17, 2020 at 1 pm ET. Another webinar will also be hosted LIVE for cat lovers, cat breeders and veterinary professionals in November which is National Diabetes Month. Registration for both webinars can be found at www.winnfelinefoundation.org and there is no fee to register (donations are, of course, welcome).
For 52 years, Winn Feline Foundation has funded more than $7.3 million in cat health studies at more than 30 partner institutions worldwide. Winn’s growth parallels that of feline medicine. Cats are no longer viewed as small dogs; they are now a major veterinary specialty. Today, cat owners expect and receive state-of-the-art medical care. They assume their cats will benefit from similar technological advances made in human medicine — and with increasing frequency, they do.
