MT16-014: Structure-based design of a novel subunit immunogen for development as a feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) vaccine

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is an important cause of death in cats, and is caused by a coronavirus. There are currently no effective treatments or vaccines for FIP. Most vaccination strategies against viruses have focused on the variable “head” domain of the envelope protein of coronaviruses, however more recently, novel “stalk”-based vaccination approaches have become established. Based on this new structural information of the viral spike protein, which is the major virus component recognized by the cat’s immune system, the investigator proposes to develop a structure-based subunit vaccine for FIP.
