Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) affects 5–20% of cats worldwide, causing a disease like human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in humans (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS). Unlike HIV, there are no approved treatments for FIV, so care is currently focused on managing symptoms rather than curing the disease. This study aims to develop a groundbreaking treatment option using gene-editing technology called CRISPR-Cas9 to target and remove FIV from infected cells.
