EC25F-377: Comprehensive Validation of urinary and serum EV-ncRNA for the Discovery of Early Renal Biomarkers in Feline Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common condition in older cats, affecting at least 30% of those over 15 years old. Unfortunately, current tests can only detect CKD once the kidneys are already severely damaged. This makes early treatment difficult and limits the chance of slowing the disease. This research project aims to find new, more sensitive ways to detect CKD at an earlier stage. The study will focus on advanced techniques involving tiny particles called extracellular vesicles (EVs) and specific molecules they carry, known as non-coding RNA (ncRNA). These may hold early clues about kidney damage. To do this, a group of healthy older cats will be followed over time. Researchers will collect and study blood and urine samples, especially from cats who begin to show early signs of kidney problems. The goal is to identify patterns in EVs and ncRNA that signal the start of CKD. The project will also test whether these early markers still work when cats have other conditions like hyperthyroidism, which can complicate diagnosis. In the end, this study will lay the groundwork for a new, more accurate test that can catch CKD in cats much earlier, giving veterinarians and cat owners a better chance to manage the disease and improve quality of life.  [Kidney Disease Fund in honor of Vicki Thayer, DVM, DABVP (Feline)](EveryCat Health Foundation General Fund)
