About
Winn Feline Foundation introduced the inaugural Cures4Cats Campaign October 21st, 2017. Leaping-design_revThis annual day of awareness is dedicated to highlighting Winn-funded research, the critical need for evidence-based medicine, early-stage biomedical research, and health answers involving cats.
Each year since its inception, Cures4Cats focuses on a specific area to raise funds for feline health research, but also to bring awareness of signs and symptoms of each disease or condition for owners and bringing the veterinary community together for these efforts to help cats live longer, happier, and healthier lives.
In Fall 2018, the Cures4Cats focus was chronic kidney disease (CKD) and Winn was able to reach the goal of raising $50,000. Winn then matched the funds for a total of $100,000 to go towards CKD research. With 2018 being only the second year for this program, Winn was thrilled with the success. 2019’s campaign was an extension of 2018’s success with a focus again on chronic kidney disease (CKD) with an emphasis on the effects of feline hypertension associated with CKD.
Winn Feline Foundation’s 2020 CURES4CATS Campaign
The fourth annual Cures4Cats Day was commemorated on Saturday, October 17, 2020. Our end of the year campaign theme will recognize the significance of diabetes mellitus in cats.
Diabetes is a common and growing malady affecting cats much like their cat loving humans. Approximately one in every 230 cats will develop diabetes during their lifetime and this is expected to increase by 18% over the next ten-years. A dynamic disease that changes over time, diabetes mellitus can be complex and potentially expensive to treat. Plus, again like humans, treatment may not be effective without consistent monitoring and timely application of diet, pharmaceutical and lifestyle solutions.

EDUCATE * ENGAGE * ENCOURAGE
This Cures4Cats campaign will aim to educate, engage, and encourage our donors and partners to help more than ever to find better and more effective treatments for this disease. Many cat lovers do not know that their cat companion has diabetes mellitus. The promotion began on Cures4Cats Day, October 17th, 2020 and will continue through December 31, 2020. Raising funds for further research will enable improvements in diabetic cats’ longevity and quality of life.

Prior health studies about feline diabetes funded by Winn can be reviewed in our searchable grant history page. Two recent grants related to diabetes in cats are:
MT19-010: Stefanie DeMonaco, Virginia Polytech, “Evaluation of flash glucose monitoring systems in diabetic cats”, $15,333
While measuring blood glucose in cats at home is an effective method of monitoring their treatment, it can be difficult. This study evaluates whether a flash glucose monitoring system or sensor (FGMS) attached to the cat’s skin is as accurate and easier to use
W20-020: Jessica Forin, Michigan State University, In Vitro Characterization of Small Molecule Inhibitors of Pancreatic Amyloidosis for Diabetic Cats, $24,365
Plaque formations (amyloid deposits) in the pancreas contribute to the occurrence of diabetes in cats. This study further characterizes the properties of a recently discovered small molecule (JF) that may inhibit the early formation of these plaques and improve the management of diabetes in cats.
We met our 2020 matching goal of $15,000 and more. Thank You!
