Last April, Winn announced the funding of 15 new feline health research projects for a total of $304,477, one of our largest grant reviews yet. One of the four 2020 feline health grants available for sponsorship will evaluate a rapid “chair-side” diagnostic test for ringworm in cats.
W20-032 – Development of a Rapid Diagnostic Test for Microsporum canis.
Principal Investigator: Sue VandeWoude, Colorado State University. $14,062
Ringworm, a common fungal infection of cats and people, can take up to two weeks to diagnose with current methods. This study evaluates a rapid, chair-side test that allows immediate diagnosis and treatment. Development of this testing capability holds great promise for significant improvements in ringworm management for individual cats as well as shelter and multi-cat environments.
